Funeral services for William C. Engel, 88, well-known Platte county resident, will be at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Gass Funeral chapel and at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church, Shell Creek.
The Rev. W. H. Saas will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Gass chapel after 11 am. Wednesday.

Mr. Engel, a resident of this community since he was a boy, died early Monday afternoon at the Social Center rest home, Osceola.

Born Jan. 15, 1873 in Douglas county, Ill., he came to Nebraska at the age of six with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George C. Engel, who located on a farm seven miles northeast of Columbus.

He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran church, where he was confirmed, and served a number of years on the church council. He also served on the District 44 school board.

On November 30, 1893 he married Clara Rickert at St. John's church, the Rev. G. F. Mueller officiating. They lived on the Engel farm until moving to Columbus in 1951. Their home is at 3017 21st Street.

Mr. Engel is survived by his wife; son, Siebert of Columbus; daughter, Mrs. Otto (Katherine) Mueller of Monroe; six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The last of his family generation, Mr. Engel was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Two grandsons, Virgil and Orville Mueller are also deceased.

Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran church, Shell Creek.

There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church.

On June 2, 1948, Mildred married Roland Wilke at Christ Lutheran Church. They farmed for many years before moving into Columbus. Mildred worked for Wunderlichs Catering and also did volunteer work at the Columbus Hospital. Mildred was active in the Ladies Aid and also taught Sunday School at Christ Lutheran Church.

Center, Nebraska. On February 12, 1945 she married Raymond W. Wurdeman in
Platte Center. Mildred worked in Columbus as a seamstress for many years at
Levine Brothers Clothing and then also at Schweser's. She also worked as a
bartender and at the Columbus Telegram. Millie spent a lot of time working
at home and raising her family. She served as past-president for the
American Legion Auxiliary and for TOPS. Mildred was also a member of the VFW
Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, where she received her "Mother Of The Year"
award, and treasurer for AAL for many years. At Immanuel Lutheran Church she
was active in the LWML and also the Evening Guild. Memorials may be given to
Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Heie Franzen was honored at a party at the clubhouse, the occasion being his 70th birthday anniversary. Bingo and progressive pinochle were played. High prizes went to Otto Franzen and Mrs. Edgar Becher, and consolation to Melvin Franzen and Mrs. R. W. Korte. A lunch was served.

Mr. Franzen, a resident of this community for more than half a century, was born in Ausfriesland [sic], Germany, and at the age of five and came to this country with his parents, brother, Otto, and sister, Minni

They found their first home in Illinois and three years later came further west to Nebraska settling in Platte county south of Creston. Heie Franzen was confirmed in Christ Lutheran church and he has held membership in Zion Lutheran church for 33 years.

He was joined in marriage to Miss Bertha Schlueter at Zion Lutheran Church. Rev Martin Winter performed the ceremony. Later Mr. and Mrs. Franzen farmed in Minnesota for five years before purchasing the farm just north of Leigh which remained the family home for many years. Mrs. Franzen died in 1942.

All of the Franzen's seven children were confirmed at Zion Lutheran. Herbert, the second son, is a graduate of Concordia seminary, Seward, and is a parochial school teacher in Peoria, Ill. Their daughter, Minnie, is a graduate nurse in Omaha and served in the Army Nurse Corps in World War Two.

The other children are Mrs. Irene Hoveling, Columbus; Edward, Albert and Mrs. Esther Marty, Leigh; and Mrs. Elsie Meyer, Pomeroy, Ia. Herbert and Elsie were unable to be present at the anniversary party. Mr. Franzen has 13 grandchildren. He enjoys a wide acquaintance and hosts of friends. [ColfaxDeutschlandPlatte.FBK.FTW]
