RICKERT, HENRY [June 11, 1850 - June 15, 1912]

Death claimed another of Columbus' most highly respected citizens last Saturday morning at 8:15 and took from our midst our friend and neighbor Henry Rickert. Mr. Rickert had been in ill health for some time, but his condition was not considered dangerous until a short time before his death, which was caused by cancer of the stomach. Mr. Rickert was born in Germany, June 11, 1850, and when but a boy eight years of age, came with his parents to America, settling on a farm in the Shell creek valley, eleven miles north east of this city. Here he spent his boyhood days and later purchased a farm in this neighborhood, where he resided for many years. In 1870 he was united to Miss Katherine Marie Wilke, who passed away four years ago. To this union eight children were born, four of whom are still living. Mr. Rickert was very devoted to his children and since the death of his aged wife, has made his home with his two daughters. He had been a resident of this city for the past five years, coming to Columbus so that he and his wife might spend their declining years in peace and comfort. Before the family came to this city they had erected a beautiful modern residence on east Eleventh street, which had since been the family home. Mr. Rickert was a prosperous farmer and had, by hard labor and thrift obtained a competence. His was a life of peace and happiness and it can well be said that the world was made better by his having lived. The children who are left to mourn his loss are: William Rickert, who lives on the home farm on the Shell creek valley; Mrs. Louis Grotelueschen, and Misses Lizzie and Ida Rickert, all of whom reside in this city. The funeral services were conducted at the late home of the deceased at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning. Rev. G. F. Miller, pastor the Shell Creek German Lutheran church, conducted the services and burial was made in the Shell Creek valley cemetery. The A.O.U.W. and Modern Woodmen lodges, of which he was a member, were represented at the funeral. [ColfaxDeutschlandPlatte.FBK.FTW]

DIED

DOMMANN--Following an illness of only a few days' duration, Mrs. Ida Dommann, 48, supervisor of the county WPA sewing room, succumbed to double pneumonia at 3:45 p.m. yesterday at St. Mary's hospital. Taken ill last Friday, she was removed from the sewing room to her home, 1819 Eleventh street, that afternoon, and from there to the hospital Saturday when it became evident that her condition was serious.

As Miss Ida Rickert, she was born June 5, 1888, at the farm home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rickert, Platte county pioneers, 11 miles northeast of Columbus on Shell creek. She attended the rural school in that district and grew to womanhood there. In 1908 she moved into Columbus with her parents when they retired from the farm.

On May 23, 1918, she was married to Theodore Dommann. One daughter, Theodosia, now 14 years of age, was born to them. A few years ago Mr. and Mrs. Dommann separated, though they were not divorced. For the last two years Mrs. Dommann has been employed in the WPA sewing room, first as an expert cutter, and, since last April, as project supervisor.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church and the Ladies Aid society, and served as treasurer of the society several years, though she had not held the office in recent years.

Immediate relatives surviving are her daughter; one sister, Miss Lizzie Rickert, with whom she made her home, and one brother, William Rickert, of Columbus.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran church, Rev. A.H. Guettler, pastor, officiating and burial will be made in Calvary cemetery northeast of Columbus. The body will be taken to the residence from the Gass Funeral home late tomorrow afternoon.

HELLBUSCH--Thursday evening last, at 7 o'clock, Henry Hellbusch and a young man named Wilkin who was working for him, started home, a distance of five miles, from Mr. Asche's, where they had been threshing all day, but at a culvert about one mile from their destination, they met with an accident in which Mr. Hellbusch lost his life.

The culvert is about four feet from the ground, and the tracks showed that one horse had walked on the ground, the other on the culvert. Wilkin was on the seat, and Hellbusch lying on a load of loose oats in the wagon. The box was overturned, and Hellbusch buried under the oats and smothered to death.
Fred Davis came along about 8:30, found the team standing, Wilkin unconscious, and Hellbusch with life extinct. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict of death by accident.

Mr. Hellbusch was about forty years old, and leaves a wife and three children to mourn their loss.

HENRY LOSEKE, SR., DEAD- At 2 o'clock this afternoon occurred the death of Henry Loseke, sr., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. H. Leavy, at the age of 85 years. He had been in fairly good health until two weeks ago when complications from his advanced years rendered him bedfast. Mr. Loseke was numbered among the oldest of the pioneers of Platte county, coming here in 1868, shortly after the town of Columbus was founded. From the soil, as a farmer and stock-raiser, he wrung a comfortable fortune, and has always been a leader in the agricultural interests in the county. Mr. Loseke was born in Oldenburg, Germany, October 11, 1837. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Loseke, and three other children to America in 1858, the family settling on the creek that now bears the Loseke name. In 1864, he was married to Mrs. Kumpf, who died in September, 1909, and was buried in Columbus cemetery, where Mr. Loseke's remains will be interred beside those of his wife. After her death, Mr. Loseke made his home with his daughter, Mrs. L. H. Leavy. Besides this daughter, six other children survive him- Mrs. Wm. Reese, of Kearney, who arrived this afternoon; Henry Loseke, jr., of this city; Louis Loseke, on Route 1 out of Columbus; August Loseke, living north of Columbus, and Mrs. Wm. Bucher of Columbus, and Mrs. Henry Grotelueschen, of Columbus, the last two named being step-daughters. One brother, Gerhard Loseke, sr., also survives him. Funeral arrangements have not yet been perfected. Mr. Loseke, throughout his life was a devout member of the Lutheran church, and was one of founders of the Loseke Creek church, affiliating with the Columbus congregation when he moved into the city. Coming as he did in the early days of Platte county history, he had witnessed its progress from a barren prairie to a rich farming community, in the development of which he played no small part.
