She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church (14 miles north), rural Columbus, Nebraska on March 9, 1930. Bernice re-affirmed her Baptism through confirmation on April 18, 1943 at St. John's Lutheran Church. She received her education at St. John's Lutheran School. Bernice and Roland Rosendahl were united in marriage on February 2, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker and a business partner with her husband. They lived on a farm near Creston before moving to Columbus in 1998. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, walking, and her grandchildren. She was a very active member of the church where she was a member of the Women's Missionary League and the church choir. TELEGRAM, July 21, 1905- JOHANNES--Mrs. Maria Johannes, widow of Henry Johannes, died Wednesday afternoon at five o'clock at her home fourteen miles northeast of this city, after an illness of three weeks which resulted in a severe type of typhoid fever. The funeral will be held this forenoon at eleven o'clock at the German Lutheran church in Bismark township, Pastor Frese conducting the service. Mrs. Johannes was in her sixty-eighth year. She was born at Oldenburg, Germany, October 16, 1837. In February, 1862, she was married to Henry Johannes, and together they came to America in 1867. For many years they resided in this county. Mr. Johannes died in 1898. The bereaved family consists of eight children, all of whom reside in this vicinity. She was a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, past president of the Ladies Aid and the LWML, coordinator of the prayer chain and she worked on quilts for World Relief. She was a lifelong resident of Platte County. She was also in the charter LPN class at Platte College. After receiving her license, she worked at the Columbus Community Hospital from 1969 to 1979 as an LPN. She enjoyed sewing and gardening. Don Barr was born on February 27, 1942 to George M. & Yvonne (Roberts) Barr in Norfolk, Nebraska. He graduated from Leigh, Nebraska High School in 1960. On November 18, 1961, he married Jane Olson at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. He farmed the family farm in Leigh until 1963. At that time, they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he was a manager for Colombian Feed. In 1968, they moved to Fremont, Nebraska where Don was self-employed as a truck driver for MTR and Eckley Trucking Firm. In 1974, they moved to Columbus where he was employed as General Transportation Manager for Lindsay Manufacturing and was involved with the Nebraska Motor Carriers Association. In 1995, he started his own Freight Brokerage business. He retired in 2001. Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He adored his grandchildren and loved being with them and watching their activities. He was on the Board of Directors for the Farm Credit Services for 18 years. Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Arnold (A.T.) Olson, on Jan. 2, 1936, in Columbus. Sylvia was right by A.T.s side helping with farming. To this marriage, five children were born -- Arnie Jr., Betty, Jane, Linda and Richard John, who died in infancy. They lived on the family farm in rural Leigh until moving to Columbus in 1996. Sylvia devoted her time and interest to her family and to her home. She had a love of flowers and her garden reflected the care she spent upon it. She was a good neighbor and a loyal friend. She had a special talent as a caregiver and a seamstress. Sylvia enjoyed baking, playing bingo, knitting and crocheting quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her special smile. Sylvia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the P.T.A. of Leigh Public School, Merry Farmerettes Extension Club and the Ladies Aid at church. On March 24, 1929, Heino reaffirmed his Christian faith through confirmation at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He also attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School. Heino worked on the family grain and dairy farm with his father and would deliver the milk to the neighbors. Heino joined the United States Army on May 18, 1942, and was honorably discharged because of medical reasons on July 28, 1943. He married Esther Kapels on Oct. 24, 1943, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They moved to Wayne, where they farmed for a couple of years. In 1945 they moved back to the Columbus area, where they continued farming until retirement. For many years Heino sold Hoegemeyer Seed. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary and trustee for several years. He was a charter member of the St. John's Lutheran Laymen League and a member of the American Legion Pieper Post No. 306 in Creston. Heino enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and welding. Allen attended school at Christ Lutheran and later in life attained his G.E.D. Allen married Louise Marty on November 1, 1939 in Lincoln, Nebraska. On March 31, 1944, Allen entered the U.S. Navy where he served for two years on a destroyer in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged on December 29, 1945. Allen delivered bulk petroleum, operated several service stations, and was an inspector for the State Department of Motor Vehicles. After his retirement, Allen worked for Ernst Auto Center in his "dream job", delivering new cars to dealers and buyers throughout the Midwest for 20 years. Allen was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the congregation. Allen was very active in the Lutheran Layman's League serving as President of the Nebraska District for several years. He also served a term on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska District of the LCMS. The body will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Chapel and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Lifetime Platte County resident, he was born at Creston Dec. 22, 1911, to J. Herman and E. Amalie (Cattau) Lueschen. He attended District 46 school and later served many years on that school board. He also served on the County School Reorganization Board; on several township boards; was ASCS committeeman for many years and a member of Farmers Unio Baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, he was a lifelong member, serving on the church council and many years as Sunday School superintendent. On Aug. 27, 1942 he married Clara Lutjelusche at St. John Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Sharon) Ternus of Genoa; two sons, Larry of Columbus, Elden of Creston; brother, Art of St. Francis, Kans.; two sisters, Mrs. Julius (Lucy) Hollman of Columbus, Mrs. Walter (Florence) Feye of Creston; five grandchildren, Brian, Lisa and Brad Ternus, Kevin and Kristel Lueschen.
